| Achieving sustainable local development is a considerable challenge for remote municipalities in Eastern Serbia. The municipality of Pirot decided to take a systematic approach to supporting development by establishing a local development office with the help of Montana, a neighbouring municipality in Bulgaria. The office will address local development challenges by identifying potentials, creating a platform for promoting the area and extending its network of partners. | | |
| This project created office for local economic development in Pirot. The activities included selection of staff, identification of a strategy for local development in Pirot, creation of a web Site and data base and presentation of the potential of local development to all stakeholders.
All the project activities were implemented producing the following results:
- Functional working space of local development office,
- Research of the present economic situation and potential for development of the municipality;
- Exchange of experience between cross border partners through visits and participation in activities on each side;
- Published brochures and promotional material - “Guide for Investors”, “Potential of cross-border region of Pirot and Montana”, “Possibilities of cross-border connection between the Municipalities of Pirot and Montana”,
- Pirot Local Economic Development (LED) strategy designed and translated in English, LED strategy approved by the Municipal Assembly after public consultation;
- Final seminar about the project and Presentation of economic potentials and possibilities of investments in the Municipality of Pirot with 60 participants on the seminar. | | |
| The project objective was achieved successfully by establishing the local economic development office and by having the local development strategy endorsed by the municipality.
The partner of the municipality of Pirot in this project was the municipality of Montana in Bulgaria. Transfer of good practice and experience from the Bulgarian side was secured through the already existing Bulgarian Local
Economic Development Partnership, which includes Montana as a member.
The project partners have implemented the majority of the project activities together, building the basis for lasting cooperation on development issues.
The project succeeded in raising the interest of investors and drew attention to the area. In this way, the project has contributed in improving the economic situation in the municipality through enhancing the potential for inflow of investments. According to the beneficiary’s analysis it is expected that through this project 5-10 investors per year will be attracted.
The local development office provides a good institutional base for further actions in support of socio-economic development of the border region municipality of Pirot. | | |
