The Serbian and Bulgarian education and healthcare system tend to struggle in providing adequate support to prevent persistent tendencies of risky health-related behaviour of youth and deteriorating quality of their life. Young people from ethnic minorities and other vulnerable groups in poorer border areas of Southern Serbia are especially at risk. The project took initiative and mobilised existing local capacities and resources to provide an innovative model of health promotion in the border region.
The project has introduced an integrated approach to health promotion in the two Districts of Kyustendil (Bulgaria) and Jablanica (Serbia) in order to help families and to make improvements to the education system. The project consisted of training youth in life skills, upgrading of health services for vulnerable and at-risk groups in order to integrate them better in society and providing training and direction for teachers so that they become more qualified in the European models and practices of health promotion in schools. The project’s activities have led to the following results as planned: - Two clubs for health initiatives with 30 volunteers each established in Kyustendil and Leskovac - Conducted two joint health campaigns and disseminated promotional materials; - Trained 60 youths in 3 modules on healthy lifestyles and health care; - European practices on “peer-to-peer School for parents and teachers” were presented, 62 youth were trained (4 training participants became educators); - 80 parents and teachers conducted two health campaigns and disseminated promotional materials among 1000 children and youths; - Two round tables were held on “school policy for the promotion of health” with 30 participants and 2 lecturers involved and “Health care through development of a supporting environment” with 60 participants and 4 lecturers involved.
By delivering all results, the objective of the project was achieved to raise awareness and promote public health of youth, especially from vulnerable groups. The project found an innovative way of promotion, which was realized through engaging young volunteers. As an indicator of good partnership and institutional sustainability, this project is the continuation of a cross-border partnership between two organisations from Serbia and Romania. The project builds on the achievements of an earlier project. This project additionally strengthened the already strong partnership of the applicant organizations. This project has contributed to establishing an area of good neighbourly relations and intensified cooperation of young people in the districts of Kyustendil and Jablanica. The project succeeded in involving a large target group and in animating young people, their parents and teachers as well as experts from educational, health care and social services regarding the important issue of improving public health.
