Serbs and Romanians in the border area often lack knowledge and understanding of each other’s culture, which tends to result in prejudices. Two schools, one from Serbia and one from Romania wanted to address this problem. The project fostered better cultural understanding by extending bilingualism in the school in Vršac and by creating conditions for further cultivation of tolerance through joint cultural activities and lectures.
This project, involving three regions, promoted tolerance and diversity between communities and especially school students through actions such as meetings, workshops and production of short documentary films on similarities and differences. Special emphasis was placed on literature, culture, art, history, folk dance (involving a choreographer from Romania) and also on ecology, ethnology, sociology and pedagogy in both countries and in all three communities. Activities produced following results: - Regular literary workshops, every week during the project; - Literary meetings: 5 meetings in Vršac school and partner schools were held with about 20 students, - Two seminars on contemporary Romanian language; - The Olympics of Romanian Language - held in Brasov, organized by the Education Ministry of Romania, students from Vršac took part; - Publications - anthology of students’ literary works, information bulletin; - Visits to theatre and opera - 50 students and 8 teachers from Vršac attended one theatre and one opera performance in Timisoara and one theatre performance in Resita; - One students play performed in Romanian; - Traditional dances workshop – from the 2nd month of the project regularly twice a week, traditional Romanian folk dances and songs, - Concerts – total 10 concerts in both countries; - Studio Recordings – five in total, one of them (performance of a set of folk dances and songs) was edited in Timisoara TV studio and used by local and regional televisions in South Banat, Tamiš and Caras-Severin; - Film activities – the Ecology club and Ethnology club made a film each in Tamiš and Caras – Severin district and one joint film in South Banat; - Cultural similarities and differences research – conducted by history club of Vršac school using a questionnaire designed for people in villages of South Banat region with Romanian minority and in the areas of Tamiš and Caras – Severin; - The history of the border region - four lectures about history of the border region were held
The realization of the project activities has contributed to the development of partnership and cooperation among youth in the border region: South Banat, Tamiš and Caras-Severin. The students from all three regions have stayed in contact and expressed a lot of interest in future collaboration while for many of them it was the first time to visit Romanian towns. The project improved the cooperation of the three regions in the field of literature, culture, art and history, primarily in the education of high school students and their teachers in Vršac. There was already an institution collaboration of the two schools; high school “Borislav Petrov Braca” from Vršac and high school “Constantin Diakonovic Loga” from Timisoara before the project started. The partnership with the college “C.D Loga” from Timisoara and Grammar School “Traian Lalescu” from Resita has been continued after project completion. The project fully succeeded in promoting the idea of living in one spatially, culturally and historically connected region among target groups. The activities realized by the project have contributed enormously to a good mutual communication, collaboration, tolerance, diversity appreciation and good relations. The school in Vršac is a bilingual high school (Serbian-Romanian), which has extracurricular activities with students of Romanian minority beside the project. There is also a decision of the Assembly of Autonomous Province of Vojvodina to support these activities in next ten years. Local authorities are also ready to give a financial contribution to activities dealing with literacy, language, and tradition of minorities. The actions undertaken in the project reflected on the overall conditions of education in the schools. The application of the knowledge and the skills gained during the seminars, workshops, and other activities have strong sustainable effect. Folk, drama, and literary clubs will continue with the work and preparations for performances in the country and beyond the border are ongoing.
