Small farmers in the northeast Serbian – Romanian border region find it difficult to compete with sufficient quantity and quality of production, and they tend to struggle to access modern markets. In order to survive and prosper, they need skills & knowledge, and they need to join networks and alliances. The Expo-Agro Banat project responded to this problem and aimed at increasing the effectiveness of regional agricultural production, especially from small farmers, by integrating them on the regional level. The networks established through the project help farmers to learn and exchange know how about modern production methods, and provide a platform for marketing and representation.
The project initiated exchange of know-how of agricultural technology between those involved in the agricultural industry in Serbia and Romania in order to increase the potential for growth in both countries and to prepare for integration into the greater European market for agricultural products. This was achieved through the creation of conditions for business contacts and improved quality and marketing of products. The latest agricultural machinery and technology was exhibited, and training and education for farmers were provided with stakeholders from food industry in both countries with special emphasis on improvement in food presentation and marketing. With activities implemented the following results were produced: - Formulated agreements with stakeholders and participants of the Organic Food Nation Fair; - Purchase of equipment; - A collaborative web site for the Expo-Agro Banat with: 1) information on organic farming and rural development in the surrounding countries and worldwide, 2) information about project implementation process and programmes of upcoming events, 3) materials produced during the project implementation: photos, recordings, promo materials, media coverage; - Marketing campaign, Expo-Agro Banat Organic Food Nation with 75 exhibitors (with more than 240 participants) from the region, between 18.000 and 20.000 visitors to the fair.
The project achieved the objective of promoting the agricultural sector though networking, exchange of knowledge and experience. The majority of exhibitors of Expo-Agro Banat were individual producers (main target group of this project) and their associations in the field of agriculture, organic farming, vineyards, flowers, bee-keeping, old trades and rural tourism. 20 companies from Serbia and 12 companies (with 16 participants) from Romania (members of the Timisoara Chamber of Commerce) have exhibited at the fair. Relevant regional and local public institutions from both countries were involved in the project. One of the most visible multiplication effects was that the Municipality of Zrenjanin and Timisoara Chamber of Commerce continued joint preparation of new project proposals. This project has had a direct impact on target groups by introducing new tools to enhance agro-food production, organic farming and marketing of the products. At the regional level, agriculture organizations and farmer associations were targeted as they have the means to capitalise on the project outputs, which they will transfer to the future generations of farmers. The project succeeded to foster productive communication links, which may lead to effective business and strengthen the agribusiness culture. Sustainability was ensured by a strong public awareness campaign, improvement of the position of small farmers through association, close cooperation with local government and cross-border partners, and applicability and appropriateness of methods used for realization. Synergies with other regional organizations (chambers of commerce, farmer unions, etc) helped disseminate the results of the action by producing documentation on the advantages of organic farming, rural development and marketing of the agro-food products of the region. In addition, farmers benefit from the excellent website dedicated to the Expo-Agro Banat fair, where they can find updated information on the key issues for agriculture development.
