| Natural disasters, especially floods, do not know national boundaries. The Serbian – Hungarian border area with its main rivers Danube and Tisa faces considerable flood risks. Cross-border flood prevention and management requires close coordination and the development of joint responses. The project set up a cross-border platform for training and development of joint standards and practices of disaster management, including public information systems, rescue and accommodation of victims, medical and psychological support, prevention and econstruction. | | |
| This project established and trained a cross-border cooperation group, which is in charge of providing information, rescue service and accommodation in the event of flooding of the Tisa River in both Serbia and Hungary. Mobile monitoring equipment was purchased and installed ready to provide early warning of flood danger, enabling preventive actions, rescuing and temporary re-housing, where necessary. A website was established providing rapid information to people in the joint region on impending floods.
All the activities planned in the project were successfully implemented and have produced following results:
- Procurement of equipment: mobile monitoring system, protective clothing, machine and tools related to protection activity, ship used in flood prevention and defence, PC and digital camera;
- Procurement related to “mobile village”,
- Training according to International Search and Rescue Advisory Group (INSARAG) standards with 280 participants and 19 completed exercises.
| The project’s results have led to the achievement of the project’s objective, with a strong cross-border and a truly joint project approach.
It is clear that floods are joint problem with consequences on both sides of the border.
Therefore joint action in preparation of a stable defence and protection system is imperative. Accordingly, the partnerships created by the project can be expected to be long term.
Institutional sustainability is secured by having the Executive Council of the Autonomous Province of Vojvodina as a member of the Euro-regional cooperation Danube-Kris-Mures-Tisa (DKMT). DKMT established a Euro-regional Development Agency Public Utility Company, registered as a legal entity in Hungary who is the Lead Partner in this Project.
The professional and organizational sustainability of the project is ensured as well, since the work of the Csongrád County Catastrophe Prevention Directorate and the voluntary rescue organizations associated with it have always been indispensable in the framework of emergencies, especially flood prevention.
The development of the professional and technical conditions of their work was assured through the implementation of the project. The data collecting station of the mobile monitoring system procured in the framework of the project ensures the collection and transfer of data regarding water level and weather.
